Storm of reactions after €4 million funding for Kanye West concert / Dutch newspaper: Edi Rama faces fierce criticism

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has devoted an article to Kanye West’s concert in Tirana and the government’s €4 million funding. The prestigious paper opens the article by writing that the Albanian prime minister has come under criticism over the use of public money, stressing that this comes at a time when his political position is strained due to protests against him.

De Telegraaf also highlights the fact that the rapper has sparked controversy because of his antisemitic views. The article mentions opposition from the Albanian Jewish community, which says that this is not simply a concert, but the legitimization of a figure with antisemitic views. The newspaper also cites statements by Rama, who has defended the decision, saying the concert will provide a significant boost to tourism and the economy.

De Telegraaf’s full article:

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is facing fierce criticism after his government allocated €4 million in public funds for a concert by controversial American rapper Kanye ‘Ye’ West.

The performance will take place this weekend near the capital, Tirana. According to opponents, it is unacceptable for taxpayers’ money to be used for an artist who has repeatedly sparked controversy in recent years with antisemitic statements and praise for Adolf Hitler.

Albania is one of the few European countries where West can still perform this summer. Several other countries and organizers have previously canceled concerts because of his controversial comments. According to the Albanian government, the financial support is necessary to make possible an event for which thousands of tickets had already been sold.

Boost for the economy and tourism

Rama defends the investment by saying the concert will provide a significant boost to tourism and the economy. The prime minister says he expects tens of thousands of foreign visitors and millions of euros in additional revenue for hotels, restaurants, and other local businesses.

Nevertheless, the decision has triggered a storm of protests. Critical reactions are pouring in on social media, and the Albanian Jewish community has also condemned the artist’s arrival. According to the organization, this is not “just a concert,” but the legitimization of a figure who has repeatedly spread antisemitic views.

The controversy comes at a difficult time for Rama, who has been under pressure for weeks because of protests against his policies and accusations that he gives too much priority to foreign investors.
