The importance of this result also lies in the fact that it was achieved through direct competition and a secret ballot among several candidates, with no automatism and no pre-determined quotas. In this process, she outpaced representatives from Poland, France and Slovenia. According to the announcement, victory in such a strong race is proof of Zajkova’s international reputation and the high regard she enjoys among parliamentarians around the world.
“The vice presidency of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is a major international recognition, but not only for me personally or for the LDP, but for all my fellow citizens in Macedonia. This is a success for each and every one of our people, not only from my electoral district and not only for those who voted for me in the elections at home. With this major victory in The Hague, we are proving that we can compete on equal terms in open elections with representatives of the highest and most powerful democracies in the world.
At last, we must begin to believe strongly in ourselves, in our capacity and in what we from Macedonia offer Europe and the world – today, but also in the future! I am grateful for the demonstrated unity of the Macedonian delegation and for the great trust of my colleagues from the 57 OSCE member states, with whom we will continue to work intensively to create mechanisms for a greater degree of democratic participation and the swift resolution of possible conflicts,” Zajkova said after her election.
