Germany is expected to allocate hundreds of billions of euros to defense by 2030, while budget specialists are raising concerns that this could lead to inflated prices and misuse of funds.
Amid the significant expansion of the defense budget, financial experts in the Bundestag and the Federal Court of Audit have warned that the arms industry could benefit from excessive price increases. Andreas Schwarz, the SPD’s rapporteur for the defense budget, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) news agency that there is a strong trend toward rising prices in this sector. According to him, “When the customer is called the Bundeswehr, different prices are charged.”

Sebastian Shefer, the Greens politician responsible for budget issues, criticized the cost of procurement projects for the German army, the Bundeswehr, stressing that in some cases they are excessively high compared with international standards. As an example, he and Schwarz mentioned fuel containers for Bundeswehr troops, where it remains unclear what caused the sharp cost increases.
According to RND reports, within four years the unit price of these containers has doubled, rising from 142,000 to around 291,000 euros. Because of this situation, budget experts have temporarily blocked the continuation of orders for fuel containers. Schwarz said that one of the reasons for this development is linked to the lack of competition and called for the issue to be monitored more strictly in the future through competition law.
The Federal Court of Audit also assessed that the special fund for the army could have a negative impact on price trends. A special report from May 2025 states that when an organization receives much more money at its disposal within a short period of time, the risk of inefficient spending increases. /DW
