In a Facebook post, Haxhiu recalled the devastating news they received ten years ago, on a Saturday afternoon, that their friend Astrit Dehari had passed away. She wrote that they visited the family today and, together with relatives and activists, paid their respects at his grave.
Haxhiu described Dehari as a dedicated activist of the VETËVENDOSJE! Movement and an exemplary medical student. She said he was courageous and idealistic, and saw political engagement as a way to stand with people, especially the poor, workers and those neglected by the state.
She said Dehari would be a doctor today and believed he would continue to stand by these people, as he had done at the time.
The Assembly Speaker said Dehari’s ideals of justice and dignity for the people continue to guide his colleagues.
Haxhiu stressed that, even after ten years, his family, community and the citizens of the Republic continue to demand justice for his death in the Prizren prison.
In her commemorative message, she said those who knew him remember his smile, courage and ideals, and pledged that the demand for justice would continue to the end. Haxhiu concluded by paying tribute to Astrit’s life and work.
Astrit Dehari died on November 5, 2016, at the Detention Center in Prizren. Calls for the case to be fully clarified continue, while the circumstances of his death remain the subject of discussion.
