AUV turns back 1,068 kg shipment of potato chips after acrylamide tests

The Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) has refused entry into Kosovo to a 1,068 kg shipment of potato chips imported by a company. During official border checks, laboratory tests showed that the acrylamide level exceeded the reference values used for monitoring.

After receiving the results, AUV’s Border Phytosanitary Inspectorate decided on October 23 to turn back the shipment and deny it entry, preventing the chips from reaching the Kosovo market.

Acrylamide is a chemical substance that can form when foods high in starch are processed at high temperatures, particularly during frying or baking.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers long-term exposure to acrylamide through food a public health concern because of its potential to cause cancer.
