FBI: North Korea stole more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency and is converting the assets

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has attributed the theft of more than $6 billion in cryptocurrency from the Binance platform to North Korea. The attack took place on October 29, 2026.

U.S. authorities say the TraderTraitor hacking group was behind the attack. The group has also been linked to the theft of $1.5 billion from the Bybit platform last year.

According to the FBI, the stolen assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins, are being converted primarily into Ethereum. They could then be laundered through decentralized finance platforms or other exchange services.

The agency has asked cryptocurrency exchanges and blockchain analytics firms to track and block transactions linked to the suspected addresses.

Binance has said it will cover all financial losses caused by the attack. The company said it used more than $6.34 billion of its own funds to recover about 90% of the stolen assets, while recovering the rest will take more time.

The incident, described as the largest digital currency theft to date, was also accompanied by a drop in the prices of several major cryptocurrencies.
