Daylight saving time ends Sunday: clocks turn back one hour

The time change takes place on Sunday, October 25. At 3:00 a.m., clocks will be turned back one hour, marking the end of daylight saving time this year.

In 2018, the European Commission examined the possibility of ending the seasonal time change and organized a public consultation, in which about 4.6 million people took part.

Although 84 percent of participants supported abolishing this system, member states could not agree on which time should be kept permanently. For this reason, the proposal was not implemented.

As a result, European Union countries continue to move clocks forward in the spring and back in the fall.

The seasonal change is not practiced in a number of Asian countries, including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. China discontinued the use of daylight saving time in 1991.

In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain do not move their clocks during the year. Iran abolished the seasonal change in 2022 and, since 2023, no longer switches between daylight saving time and standard time.

Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador are among the South American countries that do not apply seasonal time.

In Australia, the practice depends on the state. New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving time, while Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory keep their clocks unchanged, the Maariv portal reported.

Abolishing the seasonal change could make everyday life simpler and avoid difficulties for computer systems, transportation, and business. Another argument is that in areas near the equator, the length of the day changes little throughout the year.
