An airstrike in northern Sudan, near the border with Egypt, killed at least 72 gold miners and injured dozens of others. Nongovernmental organizations active in the region announced the news on Sunday.

The “Emergency Champions” group said the bombing was carried out on Saturday by Egyptian fighter jets over a gold mining area. However, AFP reported that it had been unable to confirm the information through independent sources. Egyptian authorities did not immediately respond to the incident.
This was not the first such incident in the region. In June, the same area was hit by a similar attack, which was also attributed to Egypt, killing 23 people. In that case, the Egyptian military did not accept responsibility for the bombing but said it was conducting a “broad operation” against the illegal exploitation of gold mines within its borders.
The Halaib Triangle, a territory known for its mineral wealth, has been a source of tension between Sudan and Egypt for years, with both countries considering the area part of their sovereignty.
In the context of the war against the Rapid Support Forces militia, Egypt has expressed support for the Sudanese military, while the armed conflict continues to cause casualties and worsen security in the country.
