The province of Sangario, in northwestern Turkey, has faced severe flooding following torrential rains over the past two days. Streams have burst their banks, and traffic has been disrupted in several areas.

More than 100 millimeters of rain was recorded in some places, while rainfall in various parts of Sangario reached between 120 and 150 kilograms per square meter. The mayor, Yusuf Alemdar, said the situation was extraordinarily unusual.
“Over the past 24 hours, 27 years’ worth of rain has fallen. The last time we saw rain like this was in 1999. This is extremely heavy rainfall,” Alemdar said. Water entered homes and shops and covered cultivated areas. Several roads were damaged or collapsed, while traffic on certain routes is being managed with the help of excavators and tractors.
Halk TV reported on September 30, 2026, that the driver and passenger of a vehicle climbed onto its door to add weight and prevent it from overturning.
According to the Turkish Interior Ministry, teams from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Coast Guard rescued four people trapped by the floodwaters and took them to safety. A total of 560 personnel and 225 vehicles have been deployed to deal with the situation in the affected areas.
Flooding also occurred in Moudania, Bursa, where water entered homes and shops. Rescue teams evacuated a mother, her three children and a dog from the danger zone. In the Kandı neighborhood of Orhaneli, heavy rainfall caused part of the wall of a brick house to collapse.
