A court in New Mexico has concluded that Facebook misled the state’s residents about how their personal data was used, in a lawsuit linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

New Mexico is the only state to have taken the case to court. The case is considered one of the most serious privacy breaches in internet history, after the British firm Cambridge Analytica used the personal information of tens of thousands of Facebook users for political purposes, collecting it without their knowledge.
A jury in Santa Fe ruled that all 2.1 million residents of the state had been misled. Under the ruling, this amounts to an equal number of violations of the state’s consumer protection law.
The final decision on the size of the fine will be made by the judge. Facebook could be fined up to $5,000 for each violation, which could theoretically bring the total to $10.5 billion.
The 2018 scandal also led to the bankruptcy of Cambridge Analytica.
