According to the party, new obligations worth around four billion euros have been created in just two years. SDSM claims the government is attempting to present the real level of public debt differently from what results from legally defined obligations.

The opposition party recalls that its chairman, Venko Filipçe, had earlier announced that the government had decided to borrow 1.3 billion euros. SDSM says Mickoski did not react for two days and then admitted that the country was heading towards a debt of 12 billion euros.

SDSM demands an explanation as to why the decision on the 2027 borrowing, which Mickoski had stated was taken five months ago, was not made known to the public immediately. According to the party, this proves that “there is no money, the treasury is empty.”

Another issue raised by SDSM is the 350-million-euro debt of the Public Power Supply Company (SHPP), which, according to its claim, is being excluded from the government’s public debt calculation. The party cites the Law on Public Debt, emphasizing that this debt also includes the guaranteed debt of public enterprises and state-founded joint-stock companies.

SDSM stresses that there is no “framework loan” that can be used to hide the financial state of the SHPP. For the manner of presenting the public debt, according to it, accountability must be held.

“The real topic Mickoski is running away from is debt. They are pushing Macedonia towards 12 billion euros in debt,” SDSM says. The party adds that interest expenses have increased significantly, from around 120 million euros before the start of Mickoski’s mandate to around 350 million euros currently.

In conclusion, SDSM assesses that citizens are being impoverished, while the state is increasingly burdened by debts. The party describes the government’s economic policy as “empty pockets and empty refrigerators for the people, and 4 billion euros in new debt on the citizens’ backs in just two years.”
