Zelensky in Washington on July 28: Meeting with Trump to Refocus American Attention on Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, will travel to Washington for an important meeting with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 28. American and Ukrainian media have reported this visit, which marks a concrete effort by Kyiv to put the conflict with Russia back at the top of the United States’ foreign policy priorities.

Radio Liberty reports, citing diplomatic sources, that this meeting is seen as a key step in strengthening relations between the two nations. This is not the first time the two leaders have met recently; they have had previous meetings both in France and in Turkey. Interestingly, on the same day, Zelensky is also invited to the memorial service of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.

The Trump administration, whose attention has been largely focused on the Middle East crisis, is expected to face a direct request from the Ukrainian leader to once again put the situation in Ukraine at the center of its agenda. On a parallel front, developments in the U.S. legislature indicate ongoing engagement, as the Senate may consider a new set of bipartisan sanctions targeting Moscow as early as next week.

Meanwhile, on the ground in the conflict, Ukrainian forces have continued their offensive activity. Russian media have reported that two warehouses of the large online retail company Wildberries, located near St. Petersburg and in the Leningrad region, were engulfed in flames after being struck by Ukrainian drones. Authorities in Moscow confirmed that air defense systems managed to neutralize several of the unmanned aerial vehicles, adding that there were no casualties from these attacks.
