Details of the Trump-Zelensky meeting at the White House: Patriot production and plans for Ukrainian defense

During his visit to Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he and his American counterpart Donald Trump discussed the possibility of licensing the production of Patriot system missiles on Ukrainian territory.

The meeting comes at a delicate phase for Kyiv, as the country continues to face relentless air attacks from Russian forces. Securing U.S. support to build Patriot systems under license domestically was one of the central points on Zelensky’s agenda, a concept that, according to him, Trump had viewed favorably as early as the NATO summit.

After the talks concluded, Zelensky added that beyond the issue of Patriot missiles, other proposals to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capacities were also examined.

“We put on the table the licensing for the production of Patriot missiles and other ideas that could benefit us. We also discussed the diplomatic path, because it is essential to rekindle this process. Our teams will coordinate their work for further communications,” he stated.

The Ukrainian head of state described the meeting as constructive, emphasizing that together with Trump they focused on the necessity of protecting the population and the ways in which the United States can assist Ukraine with missile defense technology.

However, the U.S. administration appears cautious about the idea of immediately sending additional weaponry, stressing that its own reserves have been drawn down. According to reports, some of the equipment Kyiv has requested is already committed by the U.S. military to operations in Iran.

Experts believe that, although rapidly replenishing the Pentagon’s stockpiles is a challenge, authorizing local production in Ukraine through licensing would bolster its defensive capabilities and, over time, reduce pressure on the American military industry. Moreover, the practical knowledge that Ukrainian troops are gaining on the ground could help create more effective and more economical platforms.
