The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, reacted today to statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said from Belgrade that Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo’s independence because it was declared unilaterally. Berisha described this stance as unacceptable and expressed deep regret.

In a statement to the media, the former prime minister stressed that Zelensky’s words openly contradict the positions of the North Atlantic Alliance as well as the Ahtisaari plan, which has been endorsed by the United Nations. According to him, they also clash with decisions of key NATO member states.
Berisha also pointed out that the statement violates international law, interpretations requested by Belgrade itself from the UN International Court of Justice, which has already confirmed the legitimacy of Kosovo’s independence. He added that this stance is also historically untenable.
Recalling the friendly ties between the peoples, the Democratic leader emphasized that Albanians both in Albania and Kosovo have shown full solidarity with Ukraine’s heroic war against brutal Russian aggression. Meanwhile, as he noted, Serbia has traditionally served as the Kremlin’s “Trojan Horse” in the region, a “little Russia” that undeniably functions as a powerful hinterland for Moscow in the Balkans.
In this context, Berisha judged that Zelensky’s stance is completely illogical and not in the interest of his country. In conclusion, the Democratic Party labeled the statement as entirely inappropriate, unfortunate, and unacceptable, adding that it should never have been made in a place like Belgrade and on an issue like Kosovo’s independence.
