Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has honored SpaceX founder and billionaire Elon Musk with one of Ukraine’s most important state decorations, the “Order of Freedom”.

The recognition, granted through a decree issued by the Ukrainian presidency, is particularly linked to the support provided by the Starlink satellite system to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022.
Starlink became an important means of communication after a large part of the relevant infrastructure was destroyed. The service began to be used by citizens, state institutions and Ukraine’s armed forces.
According to the decree, Musk is recognized for “outstanding personal merits in protecting the lives and freedom of people”, as well as for helping strengthen relations between Ukraine and the United States.
Over time, tens of thousands of Starlink terminals became involved in military activities and drone operations. However, relations between Elon Musk and Kyiv have been complicated, marked by public debates, disagreements over how the technology should be used and direct criticism of Zelensky.
