Six people were on board the Gulfstream G-100: two pilots, two medical staff members, a patient and a family member.
According to authorities, four of the people on the aircraft were Canadian citizens, while the other two were Bermudian citizens.
The U.S. Coast Guard deployed ships, helicopters and aircraft in the search, while the relatives of those on board were notified of the situation.
The aircraft departed from LF Wade International Airport in Bermuda at around 11:40 p.m. and was due to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport at around 1:30 a.m.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said that communication with the aircraft was lost shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time, while it was traveling toward Boston.
Flight data shows that the aircraft lost significant altitude, descending from around 7,300 meters to approximately 3,300 meters before communications were cut off.
Transmissions between the pilot and air traffic control indicate that, before disappearing, the aircraft was experiencing communication difficulties. The controller asked the pilot whether he was flying “blind” and whether he was declaring an emergency, but his response could not be heard clearly. Later, the controller confirmed that the pilot had reported an emergency situation.
An emergency services dispatcher asked teams to be ready for the aircraft’s arrival, referring to an “electrical problem.” After that, it was reported that the aircraft had simultaneously lost both radio communication and radar tracking.
Latitude Air Ambulances said the flight was intended to transport a patient and his relative from Bermuda to the United States.
Search-and-rescue operations will continue, while authorities are expected to issue a new update on Sunday morning, local time. So far, it has not been confirmed whether there are any survivors.
