Witkoff’s visit to Russia comes after one-day negotiations in Oslo. The talks were attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the leaders of Norway and Finland, as well as representatives from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the European Union and NATO.
The participants discussed establishing a common position on a possible agreement to end the conflict. The U.S. official quoted by Axios said that the Ukrainian side had brought “new ideas and proposals” to the diplomatic process.
Zelensky has proposed that the next step be a trilateral summit attended by him, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Russia has so far opposed this possibility, while the White House is considering organizing such a meeting.
The terms that an agreement might contain, and whether the parties are willing to compromise, remain unknown. Diplomatic efforts are continuing as fighting in Ukraine has not stopped.
According to initially reported data, a Russian attack in Kharkiv killed two people and injured 11 others.
As military developments continue, international attention remains focused on the possibility of restarting negotiations and reaching an agreement to end the conflict.
