VLEN: Ohrid Agreement is an achievement of Albanians, not property of BDI

VLEN reacted today, during a press conference, to the accusations of BDI regarding the Ohrid Agreement, reports InfoShqip.com.

In its response, VLEN emphasizes that the Ohrid Agreement, reached twenty-five years ago, fundamentally changed the political and legal architecture of the state.

According to this party, historical experience shows that even the fairest agreements can be distorted during implementation, relativized, or lose their weight when political culture and morality are lacking.

VLEN assesses that the greatest challenge of the Ohrid Agreement is not related to the signatures placed on it, but to its appropriation by a single party and its transformation into a tool for political gain.

“In the name of this agreement and the sacrifice that made it possible, seat-hoarders were created, people numbed by power. In its name, millionaires appeared, family businesses were set up, and a system was built to serve a handful of people,” the response states.

VLEN underlines that the Ohrid Agreement is not a title deed of BDI, nor the property of Ali Ahmeti, nor the family inheritance of his clique, but a historical achievement of Albanians.

According to VLEN, for more than two decades BDI had extensive control over power, having ministers, deputy ministers, MPs, directors, and officials at every level of the state.

“If there had been will, today fair and adequate representation would have been guaranteed by law, while decentralization would have been completed. But neither one nor the other was done,” the response continues.

The party declares that the rights of Albanians cannot go into opposition together with BDI and that Ali Ahmeti cannot take the Ohrid Agreement with him into opposition.

“This tale no longer holds water,” VLEN states.

VLEN says that it does not recall the Ohrid Agreement only on anniversaries, but considers it an obligation to undertake concrete measures.

One of these steps, according to it, is the legal guarantee of fair and adequate representation. The adoption of this law, VLEN emphasizes, would not only constitute implementation of the agreement but also its advancement.

Likewise, VLEN links the Ohrid Agreement with genuine decentralization, which would give municipalities more powers and financial resources. According to the party, this is being realized like never before through over 1,200 projects.

Twenty-five years after the signing, VLEN assesses that the time has come for the Ohrid Agreement to regain its dignity, not only as a legal document and an agreement that ended the conflict, but also as a historical achievement of Albanians, embodied in the constitutional order and as a permanent pledge for equality.
