This Wednesday, former police chief Mit’hat Havari called Prime Minister Edi Rama a dictator and accused the State Police of using violence against young people.
Speaking to News24, Havari said that students represent the purest part of society and are protesting for their future, over economic problems and the lack of meritocracy in Albania.

The former police chief also criticized the response of the police forces to the protesters, describing the violence used as brutal and comparing it to the actions of juntas.
“Students, seeing that the dictator—because Rama is a dictator—after Enver Hoxha, Ramiz Alia and Sali Berisha, now it is him. Dictators do not resign; dictators are brought down by the people. Students are the purest creation of society. They have no political affiliations; their future has been curtailed and they have economic problems. There is no meritocracy in Albania. In recent days, he has used violence; yesterday I saw frenzied violence against the students. This is what juntas do. Unfortunately, the State Police is directed by him. The interior minister and the director general are puppets. They have used brutal violence against the student youth,” Havari said.
According to him, the police director and the interior minister are merely puppets: “The State Police is now protecting the dictator. The people are demanding his downfall. One side is calling for his removal, while the other is protecting him. No dictator has ever seen it through to the end; there is an inevitable end.”
Commenting on Rama’s statements that the damage would be paid for by the young people and their families, Havari said that the damage did not cost more than the underwear of a person arrested for stealing from Albanians.
“If they have destroyed some infrastructure, it does not cost more than the underwear of a person who has been arrested for stealing from this people. 800,000 euros to 1 million euros is for pipes, nothing else, and some light bulbs. The revolution will pay for it, but never the students.”
