Video/ Two strong earthquakes shake Caracas, Venezuela declares a state of emergency. Authorities warn of a rising death toll

Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, has been hit by two powerful earthquakes that occurred just seconds apart.

The second tremor, with a magnitude of 7.5, is considered one of the strongest earthquakes to strike the South American country in more than a century.

Building collapses have been reported in several parts of the city, while residents rushed into the streets to find shelter in safer places. Journalists on the ground filmed the moments of the strong shaking, which caused panic among residents.

In response to the emergency situation, Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has declared a state of emergency in the country.

In her latest statement, she said that at least 32 people have died and around 700 others have been injured. According to the authorities, these are the first official figures for the dead and injured, while the number is expected to rise significantly.

Meanwhile, rescue and emergency teams are continuing operations in the affected areas, as authorities assess material damage and the risk of aftershocks. The situation is still developing, and changes in the number of dead and injured are expected in the coming hours.
