JD Vance, the US vice president, has dismissed claims that President Donald Trump’s statements negatively affected the weekend talks with Iran.
Speaking from Switzerland after several hours of discussions on a possible agreement, Vance said that Trump’s comments did not damage the progress of the process. “No, they did not derail the negotiations,” he said.

While the meetings were taking place, Trump had warned Iran of new measures and had asked the Iranian president to “be careful with his statements.”
Vance acknowledged that these comments caused a brief suspension of the negotiations, but stressed that the dialogue was not interrupted. “There were a few threats, there were a few complaints, but at the end of the day the talks continued and we made great progress,” he said.
According to the number two in the US administration, US representatives have made it clear to the Iranians that President Trump will respond to statements that Washington considers to require correction.
Negotiations between the US and Iran are continuing, as both sides aim to reach an agreement on security issues and Tehran’s nuclear program.
