The decision was approved by eight votes to seven, and Fauci now faces a criminal investigation. The United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs took the action against the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAIDS).
During a hearing last week, Fauci allegedly invoked the Fifth Amendment several times to avoid answering questions related to his role in the pandemic.
In particular, he allegedly repeatedly exercised his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent. In his opening remarks, Fauci explained that he believed Republicans could use his testimony to prosecute him, citing fears of persecution.
