The State Department has announced that Washington intends to allocate $1 billion in aid to Colombia’s new government on the day the new president, Abelardo de la Esperanza, is introduced.

De la Espriega, a new politician with limited experience who is a lawyer and businessman, received the backing of US President Donald Trump during the election campaign. He said Colombia is entering a new phase after taking over from leftist Gustavo Petro.
Washington’s planned funding is tied to the new president’s pledge to crack down on powerful drug cartels and guerrilla groups. The State Department stressed that the Trump administration intends to use the package to support President De La Esperanza’s government in achieving their shared objectives.
According to the announcement, the aid is part of efforts to “revitalize” relations between the United States and Colombia, as well as to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security and the economy.
Abelardo de la Esprieja, 48, has said he will lead the country “with an iron fist” by expanding operations against drug cartels and guerrilla movements.
