In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the decision had been made in coordination with Israel. According to him, the suspension is intended to give diplomacy a chance to prevent the conflict from escalating.
The White House chief said the agreement must provide for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the elimination of the Iranian nuclear threat. He stressed that the US remains militarily prepared but has chosen to halt the strikes to allow room for negotiations.
Trump’s position was made public as US media reported that Washington was considering carrying out further strikes on targets in Iran over the weekend.
Tehran has so far not responded to the US president’s statement. Earlier, Iranian authorities had warned that any country cooperating with the US in an attack would face severe consequences.
At the same time, US authorities have urged American citizens in the Middle East to remain especially vigilant. They have also been advised to prepare for travel disruptions and temporary airspace closures if the situation escalates.
