The US president raised the possibility that the co-pilot who, according to reports, stabbed the captain may have been a “terrorist” or may have had problems. He also praised the role of an Israeli passenger, who works as a plumber and helped stabilize the aircraft.
“I spoke at length with Bibi Netanyahu about the incident,” Trump told reporters.
“It seems the co-pilot was perhaps a terrorist, or perhaps had problems, and stabbed the captain,” the president said.
According to Trump, the captain suffered serious injuries but managed to open the cockpit door and call for help.
“The pilot was in very bad shape and, as I understand it, remains in bad shape,” he said. Trump added that, although wounded, the captain remained calm and opened the cockpit door.
The incident occurred on Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv and was forced to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot has been arrested, while authorities are investigating his motives, which have not yet been disclosed.
