Ratcliffe made an unannounced visit to Russia on Tuesday. The Kremlin later said that the CIA chief met with Russian intelligence officials but did not meet with President Vladimir Putin. However, Putin was briefed on the outcome of the talks.
Asked about the purpose of the trip, Trump said the US administration was working intensively to bring the conflict to an end. “We would like to see an end to the war in Ukraine,” he said, describing Ratcliffe as a “fantastic guy.”
“Something could come out of this,” the US president added, without disclosing details about the topics discussed during the meetings.
Details of the talks have not been made public. The visit took place at a time when efforts to end the war in Ukraine are facing difficulties, while relations between the United States and Russia remain strained.
