According to U.S. media, Savella was supposed to hand her daughter, Vivian, over to her ex-husband, Aaron Savella, on Tuesday evening. However, instead of leaving with him, she returned to her home in Houston, where she shot her daughter and then herself.

Houston authorities confirmed that the woman had attended a custody hearing just hours before the tragedy.

“The custody hearing took place earlier in the day, and the outcome was not in the mother’s favor. She returned home, shot her 4-year-old daughter and then herself,” said police lieutenant Larry Crowson.

Savella was initially taken to hospital but died the following day. The 35-year-old, who was originally from Brazil, had divorced Aaron in November 2024, after around four years of marriage. Following the divorce, the former spouses became involved in a bitter legal dispute over custody of their daughter.

About eight hours before the incident, the court had imposed further restrictions on the mother.

Documents cited by U.S. media show that Savella was prohibited from communicating with Vivian in Portuguese, except when a supervisor who spoke the language was present. She was also barred from attending the girl’s school or extracurricular activities and was ordered to pay child support obligations, as well as half of the medical expenses not covered by insurance.

The reasons that led the court to impose these restrictions on the mother have not been made public.

Vivian’s family members said they were devastated by her loss.

“Vivian was 4 years old. She was loved unconditionally by her father, Aaron, and by everyone who had an influence on her life,” the family said.

According to them, Aaron had followed all legal procedures and complied with every court order.

“On Tuesday, a judge placed Vivian primarily in his care, and she was supposed to go home with him that same evening. But that never happened.”

Charlotte Rainwater, Aaron Savella’s attorney, said the family was “devastated” by the incident.

“I have practiced family law for 28 years and have never experienced anything like this,” she said, adding that no one in the courtroom on Tuesday had imagined that the situation could end this way.
