Just five months after the “Safe City” system was put into operation, the number of people who have lost their lives in road accidents has fallen by 40 percent, Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski announced.
Presenting a report on the work carried out over the past two years, Toshkovski stressed that in the period from February 2 to June 22, 2026, 33 traffic fatalities were recorded, while in the same period last year the number stood at 55.

He also explained that from February 2, when the system began to be implemented, until June 22, more than 120,000 traffic violations were detected through “Safe City.” According to him, more than 95 percent of these cases are related to exceeding the speed limit.
Toshkovski said that “Safe City” was a project that had been discussed for years, but has now been implemented. He stressed that the project included the modernization of the existing system in Skopje, Tetovo, Kumanovo, and on Corridors 8 and 10, as well as its expansion nationwide through modern video surveillance technologies and the automatic detection of traffic violations.
According to him, in line with the planned timeline, the “Safe City” system is expected to be fully implemented across the entire territory of the country by the end of 2026. This rollout will include the largest cities and main roads, with the aim of building a modern, efficient, and preventive system to improve traffic safety, Zhurnal.mk reports.
