Serious Road Accident Claims Six Lives in Italy, 30 Others Injured

A serious road accident occurred today, August 2, on State Road 79 “Ternana,” in the Colli sul Velino area of Rieti province, near the border with the Umbria region.

According to local media reports, the accident involved a bus, a van and three cars. The toll is tragic: six people were killed, while more than 30 others were injured. Three of the injured are reportedly in serious condition and were rushed to hospitals.

The accident occurred on the road connecting the cities of Rieti and Terni, between the Colli sul Velino and Piediluco junctions, near Lake Ventina, at the exit of the Greccio tunnel.

According to preliminary information, the head-on collision between the van, which was traveling toward Terni, and the bus, which was heading in the opposite direction toward Rieti, was particularly violent. Three other vehicles were subsequently involved, as their drivers were unable to avoid the crash.

One of the vehicles was almost completely destroyed in the collision, while another overturned. Emergency crews, firefighters and law enforcement officers immediately arrived at the scene. The bus passengers were evacuated, while some sustained injuries and were treated for shock.

Emergency helicopters were also deployed to transport the most seriously injured to hospitals in the regions of Umbria and Lazio. A Civil Protection camp was also set up in the municipality of Terni.

The road was closed in both directions to facilitate rescue operations and ensure safety. Traffic was diverted at the Colli sul Velino and Piediluco junctions, causing queues and long delays for motorists. The causes and circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
