Seismic Activity Increases in New Zealand as Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes

The northeastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island was struck by a magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Sunday morning, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.

GFZ data show that the tremor occurred at 8:35 a.m. local time, with the earthquake’s epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers.

In recent days, increased seismic activity has been observed in New Zealand. A day earlier, the area near Te Anau was struck by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, raising concerns over the successive tremors in the country.

Authorities have so far reported no injuries or material damage as a result of the latest earthquake.
