Meanwhile, Kyiv has denied Russian claims that it was responsible for the attack that killed the chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, a facility currently controlled by Russian forces.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry described the accusations as unfounded, stressing that there is no confirmation from independent sources supporting Moscow’s version of events.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, responded by condemning the attack on the plant’s staff. Director General Rafael Grossi described the incident as an unacceptable attack against a nuclear facility and a serious risk to nuclear safety. He called for an immediate end to all attacks on nuclear power plants, in their vicinity or against their personnel.
According to Rosatom, Russia’s state agency, a Ukrainian drone struck a service vehicle in the area between the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the city of Enerhodar. According to the Russian side, chief engineer Alexander Yakovlev and the vehicle’s driver were killed in the attack. Moscow blames Ukraine for the incident, while Ukrainian authorities categorically reject these claims.
