The records were broken on Monday, drawing the attention of meteorologists. In Tokyo, where weather measurements have been conducted since 1875, temperatures above 30°C had never previously been recorded so late in October. The previous record was set on October 19, 2024.
The same situation was observed in Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city. There, the previous record for temperatures above 30°C during this period dated back to October 20, 1933, while meteorological data for the region have been kept since 1883.
For days when the maximum temperature reaches or exceeds 30°C, the Japan Meteorological Agency uses the term “Manatsubi,” meaning “summer day.”
The heat recorded in the final days of October is considered unusual for the seasonal conditions in Tokyo and Osaka, particularly after a summer of record temperatures across Japan.
The meteorological data cited in the report indicate that 2025 brought Japan’s hottest summer ever recorded.
Another indication of the intensity of the heat was recorded on August 5, 2025, when the temperature in Isesaki, a city north of Tokyo, rose to 41.8°C.
