Rain disease” in Europe, 126 cases in 10 countries, ECDC: Risk to the population remains very low

Health authorities in Europe are closely monitoring an increase in cases of a rare bacterial skin infection that the media have dubbed “rain disease.”

ECDC data show that 126 cases had been confirmed in ten countries as of August 20. However, the risk to the general population is considered very low. The name of the infection does not mean that it is transmitted through rain. It is caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis, which is primarily known in veterinary medicine because it affects cattle, horses and sheep.

Recently identified cases in humans suggest that the infection can spread through direct skin-to-skin contact, particularly in humid environments. Most of those affected had visited saunas or venues where intimate contact takes place, while other cases have been identified among martial arts athletes and those involved in contact sports. Transmission through contaminated surfaces or objects also cannot be ruled out.

Signs of the infection may include pimples, pustules, itching, scabs and lesions resembling folliculitis.

So far, the reported cases have generally been mild and have cleared up after treatment with topical or oral antibiotics. No serious complications have been identified.

The infection has been confirmed in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Albania and Italy have not
