Danish study raises alarm over obesity: Overweight young people face higher risk of early death

A recent study by Danish experts warns that obesity at a young age may increase the risk of premature death.

This long-term study tracked the health of 6,500 Danish men for approximately 33 years. The participants were 22 years old when the study began. Of these, around 1.5%, or 97 people, were classified as obese because they had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.

According to experts, men who are obese in their twenties are twice as likely to die before the age of 55 as their peers of normal weight.

The results showed that each additional point on the body mass index was associated with an increased risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, blood clots and diabetes. Danish researchers calculated that for each additional BMI point, the risk of heart attack increased by 5%. The likelihood of high blood pressure and blood clots rose by 10%, while the risk of diabetes increased by 20%.

By the time they turned 55, nearly half of the participants who were overweight had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure. During the follow-up period, some suffered a heart attack or cerebral hemorrhage, while others developed blood clots in their legs or lungs. Some participants also died.

Being overweight and obese is associated with a wide range of health problems. In addition to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, these conditions may be linked to gastrointestinal disorders, orthopedic problems, chronic headaches and depression.

The research also emphasizes that being overweight is linked to a greater risk of developing certain types of cancer.
