Within a few hours, the extreme heat that had gripped northern Italy for weeks gave way to rain and flooding. The regions hardest hit by the storm were Liguria, Lombardy and the northern part of Tuscany.
Torrential rain and storms caused landslides and flooding, forcing residents to evacuate.
