Former President Vjosa Osmani has reacted to Serbia’s efforts to glorify Ratko Mladic, who was sentenced to life in prison by the Hague Tribunal for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

According to Osmani, the world’s outrage over the Serbian state’s position on Mladic is entirely justified, while she stressed that Europe had been warned about such conduct.
She also criticized the European Union, saying that Brussels continues to reward Serbia with billions of euros.
Osmani wrote that it is impossible to fund a regime that glorifies Europe’s enemies and then act surprised when it behaves like one of them. According to her, the question is no longer whether Serbia has changed, but how much longer Brussels will continue to act as if that change has taken place. She added that Serbia is still sleeping on the mass graves of innocent civilians.

Nevertheless, this is precisely what we have repeatedly warned Europe about: neither Serbia nor its regime has ever changed.
The only change is that Serbia now has candidate-country status for EU membership, while glorifying war criminals and celebrating their criminal acts.
This is a candidate country that continues to deny genocide, crimes against humanity, wartime sexual violence and the massacre of young children, among other crimes.
It is a candidate country that has never stopped attacking its neighbors.
This candidate country stands alongside Putin, cooperates with China and Iran, and undermines Europe’s security, even as it presents itself as a European partner.
Serbia is also a candidate country that refuses to open its archives, while families in Kosovo, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina continue searching for their loved ones who were forcibly disappeared.
Despite all this, Brussels still rewards Serbia with billions of euros.
It is impossible to finance a regime that glorifies Europe’s enemies and then be surprised when it acts like one of them.
The question is no longer whether Serbia has changed. The issue is how much longer Brussels will pretend that it has.
Serbia continues to sleep on the mass graves of innocent civilians.
Perhaps one day, even if only for a single day, Brussels will wake up and recognize Serbia’s true face.
