Donald Trump has floated the idea that the United States could rename Lake Ontario, proposing that it be called “Lake America.” The statement comes as the trade clash between the United States, Canada and the province of Ontario deepens.

“The United States is seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, as we do not expect to do much more business with Ontario,” the US president wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump ended the post with the message: “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The trade crisis between Washington and Ottawa took a new turn on August 22, when negotiations between the two countries ended without an agreement. Following this, Trump announced 50 percent tariffs on several products imported from Canada, including wine, dairy products, hockey sticks and cement.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford had attacked Trump a day earlier, describing him as “the kind of person who would steal your lunch money.”
Ford also warned of countermeasures against the United States, including suspending electricity exports and shipments of minerals such as nickel from Ontario to the United States.
This is another instance of Trump proposing to change the name of a well-known geographical area.
During 2025, he signed a proclamation renaming the Gulf of Mexico “the Gulf of America,” at a time when relations with Mexico had become strained over border issues.
