NIPH Calls for Vigilance in the Heat: Children Should Not Be Left in Cars Even for a Few Minutes

The National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (NIPH) has appealed to citizens to take extra care on days with high temperatures, noting that heat can have serious consequences for health.

According to the Institute’s recommendations, people should drink water continuously, while sugary drinks and alcohol should be avoided. Citizens are also advised not to expose themselves to the sun during the hottest part of the day, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and to stay in cool or shaded areas.

NIPH advises wearing light, cotton and light-coloured clothing. Special attention is required for elderly people, who are considered more vulnerable to high temperatures.

The Institute reiterated that children should not be left in vehicles, even for a few minutes, as the temperature inside a car can rise rapidly and pose a serious risk to life.

Other recommendations include regular hydration, using sunscreen, and covering the head and protecting the eyes with a hat or sunglasses. NIPH urges citizens to watch for signs of heatstroke, including fatigue, dizziness and headaches. If a person’s health condition worsens, medical help should be sought immediately.
