Netanyahu: Israel must achieve “weapons independence” before US aid ends in 2028

As the US military aid agreement expires in 2028, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel must build “weapons independence” and strengthen its military industry.

In a speech to reserve officers in the West Bank, Netanyahu expressed appreciation for the support the United States has provided to Israel so far, but stressed that the country must have the ability to produce its own weapons and defense systems.

The statement comes at a time when relations between Israel and the United States are increasingly marked by sharp political debates, while the current 10-year agreement provides Tel Aviv with $3.8 billion in military aid each year.

At the same time, Israeli authorities have begun talks with the US administration on a new framework for security cooperation for the period after 2028.
