The Financial Times reported that authorities in Tehran had analyzed options for possible strikes against U.S. military bases on European territory if the United States escalates its operations.
A NATO official, asked by Reuters about the report, emphasized that the alliance has strong defensive and deterrent capabilities.
“NATO is prepared to confront any threat and will always do what is necessary to protect all allies,” the official said.
As evidence of these capabilities, he cited NATO air-defense operations conducted earlier in 2026, when ballistic missiles launched toward Turkey were intercepted repeatedly.
“As demonstrated earlier this year, when NATO air defenses successfully intercepted four ballistic missiles directed by Iran toward Turkey, our deterrent and defensive posture is strong and effective,” he stated.
According to people close to the Iranian regime who spoke to the Financial Times, Tehran has considered the possibility of extending the conflict beyond the Middle East, including attacks on U.S. military targets in Europe if Donald Trump escalates the war.
Two sources familiar with the discussions told the FT that Iranian forces have assessed scenarios for striking U.S. installations in southeastern Europe, including those in Bulgaria. Last month, Sofia approved the use of Bezmer air base by U.S. refueling aircraft.
One of the sources said that, in the event of a new U.S. attack, Cyprus could be among the potential targets for retaliation. On the island, the British base at Akrotiri was attacked by a drone in March.
According to the same source, the Iranian military has also separately considered the possibility of striking underwater fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz if the confrontation expanded further.
