Merz’s second visit to the Ukrainian capital since taking office as chancellor was intended to convey Germany’s support for Ukraine. He said he had assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that German assistance would continue.
“If Russia does not stop, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us,” Merz said.
Meanwhile, aerial clashes between the two countries have escalated. Moscow is using ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones against targets in various Ukrainian cities, while Kyiv is striking Russia’s oil industry and businesses in Russia.
During the German chancellor’s stay in Kyiv, local media reported that explosions were heard. Following Russia’s aerial offensive in recent days, Zelensky warned that Ukraine would resume attacks on Russian oil refineries.
