The Democratic League of Kosovo has announced that its leader has decided to convene an Extraordinary Assembly after the statutory requirement of securing signatures from at least one-third of the delegates was met.

The extraordinary meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, July 30.
Following the announcement, LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku wrote on Facebook that the assembly scheduled for July 30 is “unnecessary, untimely and inappropriate.”
Abdixhiku said he views the process as “harmful and divisive,” but explained that he decided to convene the assembly out of respect for democracy.
“I must accept it as such, even though I do not consider it right. I respect democracy because I believe in it, and for that reason, I will face this process. I expect others to act in the same way after Thursday, when the LDK expresses its will once again,” Abdixhiku wrote.
Bajram Gecaj Expects a New Chapter for the LDK and Kosovo
LDK member Bajram Gecaj told “Bota sot” that he expects the Extraordinary Assembly to bring reflection, change and new energy within the party.
He believes that dissatisfaction may emerge but does not foresee a split, while hoping that the meeting will open a new chapter for both the LDK and Kosovo.
“I expect the Democratic League of Kosovo to demonstrate once again at the Extraordinary Assembly that it remains the only serious party in Kosovo to have established genuine democratic procedures, culture and spirit. It must also address the issue of a leadership change with maturity,” Gecaj said.
He recalled that although the processes have not always proceeded without difficulties, the LDK has so far elected three successive leaders after its Historic President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, and subsequently rallied behind the elected leadership, as it also did on January 31 of this year.
“On Thursday, we must have the courage to reflect, make changes and move forward. The LDK needs new energy, a different strategy, stronger action and unwavering loyalty to the values built over 37 years,” he said.
According to Gecaj, dissatisfaction is possible, but no further divisions or fractures are expected, as the party needs the contribution of every member and of many others who wish to join it.
“I believe this Assembly will mark the beginning of a new chapter, not only for the LDK but also for Kosovo,” Gecaj said.
Saim Tahiraj: July 30 Is the LDK’s Greatest Challenge in the Post-War Political Period
Activist Saim Tahiraj also spoke to “Bota sot” about the issue. He said that, in principle, the Extraordinary Assembly should proceed as a normal statutory procedure, but warned that clashes between the two camps could prevent the outcome sought by the LDK’s membership and electorate.
“In a functioning democracy, such an extraordinary assembly should be viewed as an entirely normal process organized in accordance with the LDK Statute. The winner, whoever it may be, should be accepted by everyone and congratulated on their success. The party should then continue with deep reforms at every level so that it enters the next elections united and strong,” Tahiraj said.
However, he stressed that it will become clear on July 30 whether such a goal can be achieved. According to him, the main question is whether participants will manage to set aside their egos, resentments and individual interests and give priority to the interests of the LDK.
“Developments so far do not provide much reason for complete optimism. Both camps have already taken fairly firm positions and, unless tensions ease, there is a possibility that the assembly will not deliver the outcome expected by the party’s members and voters,” he said.
Tahiraj also called on authoritative and influential figures within the LDK to make every effort to preserve calm, continue dialogue and strengthen democratic unity.
He emphasized that the LDK must emerge united from this meeting at all costs, as only in this way can it grow stronger and move forward as the most serious political alternative.
According to Tahiraj, broad consultations are needed to select a consensus-building and unifying figure who has the trust of the membership and represents the LDK’s values.
“This is not the time to experiment with individuals who were not politically formed within the LDK or who joined it only recently. The figure who will unite the party must come from within its own ranks and represent the LDK’s identity, tradition and spirit. Any other experimental solution could bring new dissatisfaction, divisions and further weakening of the party,” Tahiraj concluded for “Bota sot.”
