The Democratic League of Kosovo has announced that its chairman has decided to convene an Extraordinary Assembly, after fulfilling the statutory requirement that required the support with signatures of at least one third of the delegates.

According to the announcement, this gathering will be organized on Thursday, July 30.
A few hours later, LDK chairman Lumir Abdixhiku expressed his position on the social network Facebook, where he described the meeting called for the end of the month as “unnecessary, untimely and out of place.”
However, he stressed that, although he sees this initiative as “harmful and divisive,” he called the assembly for the sake of respect for democratic principles.
“As such, I have to accept it. Even when I don’t think it’s right. I respect democracy because I believe in it. So I face it. I expect others to behave the same after Thursday, when LDK speaks again,” Abdixhiku wrote in his reaction.
Meanwhile, a member of this party, Bajram Gecaj, in an interview for “Bota sot,” said he hopes that this Extraordinary Assembly will bring a spirit of awareness, transformation and fresh energy for the political entity.
He acknowledged that there may be dissatisfied voices, but he does not see a risk of breaking ranks, believing that this event will mark the beginning of a new phase both for the party and for the country.
“From the Extraordinary Assembly, I expect that the Democratic League of Kosovo will prove once again that it is the only serious party in Kosovo that has built genuine democratic procedures, culture and spirit, overcoming with maturity even the issue of leadership change,” Gecaj said.
He added that although these processes have not always been without cost, the party has managed to elect three leaders after the Historical President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, lining up behind the chosen leader, as happened also in January of this year. “Therefore, I expect that on Thursday we will have the courage to reflect, to change and to move forward, because LDK needs new energy, a different strategy, stronger actions and unwavering loyalty to the values forged over 37 years,” he concluded.
Gecaj further stressed that he does not foresee deep divisions, but perhaps the appearance of some discontent, adding his conviction that the meeting will open a new chapter both for LDK and for Kosovo. “Discontent there may be, but I do not expect new divisions or breakups, because LDK needs each of us and many others who want to join,” he declared.
On the other hand, activist Saim Tahiraj, in a statement to the same medium, described July 30 as the most difficult challenge for LDK in its entire post-war political history.
Tahiraj considered that such a process should be completely normal according to the statute, but expressed concern that tensions between the two factions could make it difficult to achieve a result that satisfies the membership and supporters.
“In a functional democracy, this Extraordinary Assembly should be considered a completely normal process, conducted in accordance with the Statute of LDK. Whoever wins must be accepted by all, wished success, and then serious reforms should continue at all levels,” he said.
However, Tahiraj added that it remains to be seen whether everyone will be able to put aside personal interests and put the good of the party above all else. He warned that, considering the strong positions of both camps, if there is no de-escalation of tensions, the assembly may not produce the result expected by the membership and the electorate.
In conclusion, he appealed to influential figures in the party to engage for unity, arguing that the fate of LDK should be entrusted to a consensual personality emerging from within its structures, and not risked with experiments. “The unifying figure must come from within LDK, representing its identity, tradition and spirit. Any other experimental alternative risks producing new discontent, divisions and further weakening of the party,” he closed his statement.
