A clash has emerged within Britain’s Labour Party over how it should proceed if Keir Starmer steps down, with Andy Burnham increasingly being seen as the frontrunner to succeed him.
As pressure on the party grows to clarify its political direction, Labour MPs remain divided over whether a formal leadership contest should be held.

Jo White, a Labour MP, has described such a process as a “pointless farce”. According to her, a contest would drag on until September and prevent the government from focusing on its priorities. She stresses that the party needs a new leader as quickly as possible so that the work of government can continue without delay.
On the other side is Nadia Whittome, who is calling for the leader to be chosen through an open and transparent contest. She supports the idea of candidates presenting their vision to party members and trade unions, going through a full vetting process.
According to Whittome, following such a procedure would strengthen both the Labour Party and the government in the future, regardless of which candidate takes over the leadership.
