La Repubblica: Meloni could resign in March, paving the way for early elections; the right is preparing candidates

Giorgia Meloni could leave office as prime minister in March 2027, after the European Council summit expected to be held in Rome. Such a move would make it possible to hold early parliamentary elections.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports that Meloni discussed this possibility in recent meetings with her government partners: Antonio Tajani, Matteo Salvini and Maurizio Lupi.

The summit in Rome, planned to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, could be the prime minister’s last major international engagement before she asks the President of the Republic to dissolve Parliament and call early elections.

Voting could take place as early as 16 May 2027. However, the scenario considered most likely is for parliamentary and local elections to be held on the same day in June.

According to La Repubblica, holding the two elections together would create an opportunity for early elections, several months before the end of the current parliamentary term, which is expected in autumn 2027.

Meanwhile, leaders of the right-wing coalition continue to say publicly that elections will be held according to the usual schedule. So far, no official announcement has been made about Meloni’s resignation or the holding of early elections.

At the same time, Italy’s right-wing camp is stepping up preparations for local elections and the selection of candidates in the country’s major cities.

Among the cities expected to see a significant contest are Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna, the report says. Discussions over candidates have sparked debate within the coalition parties, as leaders seek to reach an agreement before the campaign enters its most intense phase.

Developments in the coming months are expected to influence the setting of Italy’s political timetable. For now, early elections remain a scenario reported by the media, not an officially announced decision.
