Kurti: Without an Agreement on the President, Constituting the Assembly Could Lead to Its Dissolution

Following the suspension of the constitutive session of the Assembly of Kosovo, acting Prime Minister and leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement Albin Kurti said that a political agreement must first be reached on the election of the new president.

According to Kurti, proceeding with the constitution of the Assembly without resolving the issue of the president would lay the groundwork for the dissolution of the institution.

“We want to allow room for political dialogue and the possibility of reaching an agreement on the new president. Any constitution of the Assembly without an agreement on this issue would, in practice, amount to preparation for the dissolution of the Assembly,” Kurti said on 06.08.2026, after the session was suspended.

He stressed that political dialogue remains the only path toward the full consolidation of the institutions, also referring to the result of the June 7 elections.

Kurti said that creating an opportunity for talks and reaching a political agreement is the right solution for fully constituting the institutions, in accordance with the order and will expressed by citizens in free and democratic elections.

The Vetëvendosje leader said that since the election results were published, his party has sought to begin discussions with the political parties.

He said that he himself is taking the initiative to arrange meetings on the political situation, while confirming that communication with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku is taking place directly and without intermediaries.

Kurti said that LDK leaders and MPs from the party have publicly called for the sides to reach an agreement on all issues. He recalled that during the spring he had been criticized for electing the speaker of the Assembly and the government without first holding meetings with them.

“I have taken note of all the criticism directed at us in the spring. We have reflected on it, and this time we are acting differently: we are not constituting any institution without meeting first, as we were asked to do. I am taking all the initiatives for meetings because I want cooperation,” he said.

Kurti added that meetings with the LDK are no longer news, whereas a meeting with the PDK and AAK would be news.

Earlier, it had been announced that Kurti would hold a press conference at 12:30 in the Assembly of Kosovo, immediately after the constitutive session was postponed. The session was suspended after he requested additional time to continue discussions with the parliamentary parties on an agreement to elect the country’s president.

The conference was expected to address the latest political developments, the reasons for postponing the session, and the next steps toward forming the new institutions.
