The third heatwave has swept Italy at the start of summer, with temperatures expected to be 7 to 8 degrees above seasonal averages and potentially reaching a high of 43 degrees Celsius.
The peak of this African heatwave is forecast for midweek, specifically from Wednesday to Thursday, as local authorities have raised the alert level to red and orange for several urban areas due to the threat it poses to public health.

The Ministry of Health has placed cities like Florence and Perugia under the highest red alert. Meanwhile, Bologna, Brescia, Frosinone, the capital Rome, and Turin are expected to be added to this list in the coming days.
According to specialists, these unseasonably high temperatures are due to the strong presence of the African anticyclone, which transports scorching air masses toward the European continent. The World Health Organization has stressed that Europe is experiencing one of the fastest warming rates globally, ranking second only to the Arctic region.
At the same time, experts emphasize that these extreme episodes are closely linked to the climate crisis and the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Activities such as burning fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas – have contributed to rising global average temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events.
To cope with this scorching heat, doctors urge constant hydration and a diet based on fresh fruits and vegetables. Products like watermelon, melon, cucumber, tomatoes, and other seasonal fruits are the best allies on these hot days.
On the contrary, carbonated and high-sugar drinks, alcohol consumption, and excessive coffee should be avoided, as they promote fluid loss from the body.
Those suffering from chronic illnesses, especially patients under treatment for hypertension, should be extra vigilant and seek medical advice before making any adjustments to their medication.
As for air conditioning, specialists recommend keeping it at moderate levels, around 25 to 27 degrees Celsius. Also, fans should never be directed straight at the body, as this practice promotes dehydration.
Extra care is also needed for pets, as dogs and cats are highly vulnerable to high temperatures. Owners are advised not to take them for walks during peak heat hours, to provide fresh water at all times, and above all, never to leave them inside parked cars.
Italian state structures are continuing to monitor the parameters without interruption, while the population is urged to exercise maximum caution during this extreme heat phase.
