Scorching September in Spain as thermometer reaches 45.7°C while Italy is hit by sixth heatwave

Autumn has yet to arrive in Spain, where the highest temperature ever recorded during the month of September has been registered. In the city of El Granado, in the southwest of the country, temperatures reached 45.7 degrees Celsius, according to data confirmed by Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The reading recorded in El Granado matches the national September record, set in 2016 in Montoro. Both areas are located in southern Andalusia. Moreover, 45.7 degrees Celsius is the highest temperature recorded in Spain throughout the entire year. This comes during a week in which another heatwave has swept across large parts of the south and west of the country, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Italy is also experiencing its sixth spell of high temperatures. In many northern cities and central regions, thermometers are recording around 34–35°C, figures significantly higher than the seasonal average. The heatwave is also continuing to affect southern France.

This summer has been marked by unusual longevity and heat. It began as early as May and was followed by several consecutive scorching episodes. According to experts, the situation is linked to the uninterrupted influence of the African anticyclone, which transports air masses with extremely high temperatures.

Meteorologists forecast that the weather in Italy may cool from Thursday, when colder air masses are expected to arrive from the North Atlantic. However, the change could be accompanied by powerful storms and hail. According to data from the European Centre, temperatures above the seasonal norm may continue until the beginning of October, so this does not necessarily mean the end of summer.
