According to a notice shared by the White House on social media, recently declassified memoranda show that the FBI launched a criminal investigation into Donald Trump in May 2017, even though the evidence available to the Bureau at the time, according to the publication, did not support claims of collusion with Russia.
The post published on Instagram and on the White House’s official website states that the investigation was based on the suspicion that Trump had removed former FBI Director James Comey from office because he considered him a “Russian asset.”

The publication also included a statement by journalist John Solomon: “The FBI opened a criminal investigation specifically targeting Donald Trump in May 2017, even though the Bureau’s own evidence overwhelmingly showed that at the time there was no collusion with the Kremlin.”
The documents were made public after several memoranda related to investigations conducted during the first years of Trump’s presidency were declassified. The White House presents them as evidence that the investigation into the then-president was opened without sufficient grounds.
