Hungary’s parliament approved the 17th constitutional amendment with 139 votes in favor and 6 against, making it possible to dismiss the current President of the Republic, Tamas Sulyok. 54 MPs did not take part in the vote.

This constitutional amendment was designed specifically to oust the sitting president, but it creates the possibility for other dismissals in the future.

One day after this amendment enters into force, the president’s term ends and Parliament will elect another head of state, to serve no more than five years.

In a speech before the official agenda began, Magyar said it would be a betrayal of the Hungarian nation if the Constitution drafted by Fidesz was not touched, which he called a founding document of the Hungarian Cosa Nostra.

The Hungarian prime minister did not fail to mention his predecessor, Viktor Orban, about whom he said that the entire system was subjugated to the will for political survival of just one man.
